《耳中人》应改的动人一点，谭某求学途中路遇一荒村，一女乱奔误入谭耳，谭某忽就在这里住了下来，第二日晨读的时候，女被他的叫声所吵醒，出来本欲斥他，念自己受伤要休养，方才收住，交谈一番，谭某问她住哪，女曰：“我住你家。”谭某：“这话好笑，姑娘若住我家，我又住哪里。”谭某不信，后分别离去。及至晚上，谭某挑灯夜读，忽见一美丽女子乘酒上来，道：“汝不是今早所见，奈何又至？”女曰：“小女子说过住你家，这你信了吗，现有美酒献上。”谭某道：“这也好，我们可以饮酒作诗。”女曰：“你不怕我是妖吗？”谭某乘着酒性道：“妖书倒读过不少，妖女未曾见。”及谭某醉去，女在其书上写妖字。日中，一道士路过，问书生是否见一妖，书生道只有自己，说完又读书，道士见其书字妖，问：“这里怎一个妖字。”谭某道：“我本欲写好字，错写妖。”反复问，并无结果，谭某说：“妖至他处，你可他寻。”道走，谭喜，及至夜，待妖出，妖不出，谭某忽觉耳痛，摸之已烂，再摸已入骨，方显妖性。
